"The
Lord said, 'Go out and
stand on the mountain
in the presence of the
Lord, for the Lord is
about to pass by.'"
"Then
a great and powerful
wind tore the mountains
apart and shattered
the rocks before the
Lord, but the Lord was
not in the wind. After
the wind there was an
earthquake, but the
Lord was not in the
earthquake. After the
earthquake came a fire,
but the Lord was not
in the fire. And after
the fire came a gentle
whisper. When Elijah
heard it, he pulled
his cloak over his face
and went out and stood
at the mouth of the
cave. Then a voice said
to him, "What are
you doing here, Elijah?"'."
(1 Kings 19:11-13)
FOCUSING
ON THE SOUND
'Sitting
at a Wendy/Tim Horton's
restaurant I focused
on the sounds.
- A
group behind me deep
in conversation
- Another
couple to my right
both speaking in another
language
- A
constant warning beep
from the Wendy's side
that something was
ready or cooked
- The
sound of a tray being
laid on the counter
- Paper
bags being opened,
some being crumpled
- The
door to the Rest Rooms
squeak open and closed
- A
soft cell phone conversation
goes on beside me
- Laughter
over the radio playing
in the ceiling speakers
- The
guy next to me thumbs
the cell phone in
and out of its plastic
holder
- The
door on the Wendy's
side slams shut in
the wind
- Another
couple sitting across
from each other laugh
and their eyes sparkle
for each other
- An
alarm goes off like
a school bell
So many sounds, all
potentially distracting,
some overwhelming really.
A thought goes off in
my head to stand up
and yell at the top
of my lungs, 'SHUT UP!'
just to hear the sudden
shocked silence-the
thought continues on
through my mind and
out.
God
I want to hear Your
still small voice even
in the madness.
Was that thunder? Thunder
because lightening flashes
as well, the storm promised
earlier is here.
